10 Sep 2008 : Bravo!

Probably the most diverse concert I have heard for a long time was the internationally acclaimed NZTrio at The Centre last Sunday afternoon. Pianist Sarah Watkins, violinist Justine Cormack and cellist Ashley Brown took us on a roller coaster ride through a variety of music written 300 years ago to the contemporary compositions of Australian composer Ross Edwards and NZ composer Phil Dadson. Certainly the highlights for me were the contemporary compositions. The first two movements of Ross Edwards, ‘Piano Trio’ Allegretto and Poco Adagio are exquisitely haunting with intimate dialogue between cello and violin, delicately supported by piano.

The ultimate highlight of my music week was being part of the audience that heard the world premier of Phil Dadson’s latest composition ‘Firestarters’ - a piece that challenges musicians and audience. The musicians are taken out of their comfort zone and required to produce sounds and rhythms from their ‘prepared’ instruments. The ‘music’ is very cleverly written so that at no time does one individual sound become irritating or invasive. Each sound is comforting and supremely beautiful painting exquisite pictures on an ethereal canvas. The NZTrio interpreted and performed this piece masterfully. Bravo!
